To rent in Kerkennah, you first need to know when. The archipelago, about an hour by ferry from the port of Sfax, runs on two calendars: that of the year-round residents, fishermen, teachers, municipal and public-service employees, and that of the summer visitors, Sfax families and returning emigrants who fill the villages from Remla to El Attaya from late June to late August. A Kerkennah rental changes nature between the two: a house with a garden let by the week in summer, a simple home by the month the rest of the year.
This page gathers all the rental listings of the delegation, houses, studios, villa floors and the rare apartments, published on Houni by owners and a few Sfax agencies. The stock remains modest, a real but limited supply, as many summer lets are still arranged by word of mouth. To widen the search, all the homes to rent in the Sfax governorate are on a single page.
You land at Sidi Youssef, at the tip of Gharbi island. Mellita is the first village, a few minutes from the port: handy for anyone going back and forth to Sfax, but also the most exposed to the ferry queues in August. The El Kantara causeway then leads to Chergui island, the larger one, where most of the supply is: Remla, the main town with its administrations, its post office and its market, then Ouled Kacem, Kellabine, Ennajet, El Attaya and Kraten towards the north.
Sidi Frej, on the west coast of Chergui, is the archipelago's hotel zone and the sector where the recent villas with a pool, built by emigrants and Sfaxians for seasonal letting, are appearing. A villa to rent in Kerkennah with a pool is almost always there or in its immediate surroundings. Remla and Ouled Kacem offer the most practical year-round rentals; El Attaya and Kraten, further away and quieter, draw those who come for the sea and the silence.
From June to September, supply tips over into holiday letting. The classic formula is the single-storey Kerkennah house with a courtyard or garden, two or three bedrooms, let by the week or the fortnight. Prices depend mostly on the distance to the beach and on air conditioning: a simple house often rents for between 80 and 150 DT (Tunisian dinars) a night in July, markedly more for a villa with a pool in Sidi Frej. The best-placed properties are booked from spring by the regulars; in August, what is left is expensive or far from the water.
Listings for a house to rent in Kerkennah for the summer generally state the number of beds, whether there is a cistern or a tank (water pressure drops at the height of the season), and whether linen is provided. To see only whole houses, the houses to rent in Kerkennah page isolates that category.
Out of season, demand comes from people transferred or on assignment: teachers posted to the archipelago's schools and secondary school, health staff, employees of the companies working the offshore gas, tourism seasonal workers staying on. Year-round supply is small and rarely advertised: owners prefer to keep the house free for the summer or for the family. A year-round home, a villa floor or a small house, is often negotiated at a few hundred dinars a month, well below the city of Sfax.
A studio to rent in Kerkennah is the most frequent query and the hardest to satisfy: there are almost no small apartment blocks, and the studios on offer are converted outbuildings or independent rooms with a kitchen, mostly in Remla and Mellita. If you are looking for one for September, start in July.
For a summer let, ask for recent photos and written confirmation of the total price, deposit included, and check how the water is heated and whether there are mosquito nets. For a year-round rental, insist on a written contract, even a simple one, with the amount of the deposit and the split of water and electricity bills: in Kerkennah, water is a serious matter and the meter is sometimes shared between several homes in the same courtyard. Those thinking of settling for good will also look at the property for sale in Kerkennah, where a village house costs less than an apartment in Sfax.
