Bekalta is a coastal town in the Sahel, at the south-eastern tip of Monastir governorate, between Teboulba and the Mahdia boundary. Life here runs between the sea and the olive groves, in family houses extended over the years, and renting follows two very different calendars: the yearly let, sought by civil servants, teachers and workers from the region's factories, and the summer let, which pushes demand up from late June.
The rentals in Bekalta listed on Houni come almost entirely from private owners: an owner letting the ground floor of their house, a family living abroad who entrust the floor of their villa, an heir putting the parents' house back on the rental market. You call them directly, with no middleman. To widen the search to Teboulba, Moknine or Monastir, all the homes for rent in Monastir governorate are gathered on a single page.
What gets rented in Bekalta
The typical home is a single-storey house with a courtyard, built by a local family and extended by a floor when the children married. Many owners live downstairs and let the upstairs, with a separate outside staircase. A whole house for rent in Bekalta also turns up, often because its owners live in Tunis, Sousse or Europe and only come back in summer. These houses offer space, usually three bedrooms, a separate kitchen and sometimes a small garden with an olive or lemon tree.
Flats in apartment buildings remain a minority in the town. Those wanting an S+1 or S+2 (one or two bedrooms plus a living room) in a small residence will find the dedicated listings on the apartments for rent in Bekalta page, where supply is thinner but more uniform.
Bekalta Nord, Bekalta Sud and El Baghdadi
Bekalta Nord and Bekalta Sud form the heart of the town, around the centre, the shops and the administrative services. This is where yearly rentals are concentrated: family houses, independent floors, a few flats above shop units. Life here is on foot, and it is the logical choice for a family that wants the school, the market and the mosque a few streets away.
El Baghdadi, the delegation's other area, has a more residential and open feel, with newer houses on larger plots. A house to rent in El Baghdadi appeals to those looking for quiet and space, even if it means driving for the shopping. Bekalta is also a short distance from Mahdia and Moknine, which lets some tenants work in one town and live in the other.
Summer lets: book early, check on site
Summer rental in Bekalta is a market of its own. From spring, owners offer houses near the beach by the week, the fortnight or the month, mostly for July and August. Customers are families from inland Tunisia, residents of the big Sahel towns and emigrants coming home for the holidays. Prices vary sharply with distance from the sea and the week chosen: the fortnight around 15 August is always the most expensive, and the best houses often go before June.
For a beach rental in Bekalta, ask for recent photos, the real walking distance to the sand, whether there is a cistern or water tank in case of cuts, and the number of beds. A video call with the owner avoids plenty of disappointment. Out of season, from September to May, some of these houses are let by the year at a more modest rent, and that is often the best deal in town.
Rent, lease and deposit
By the year, the rent for a house or a floor in Bekalta generally stays well below Monastir or Sousse, often between a few hundred dinars and a little more depending on size and condition; furnished homes cost more. The market is small: the online supply is real but limited, so you need to act fast when a decent property appears.
Insist on a written contract, registered at the tax office, stating the term, the amount, the deposit (often one or two months) and how water and electricity bills are split. For a floor in the owner's house, put access to the roof terrace, the meter and parking in writing. If renting turns out not to suit you, the homes for sale in Bekalta show what buying costs in the same town.
