Apartments for rent in Le Kef

1 listing found

Le Kef governorate has few apartment blocks. The town grew as tightly packed houses on the mountain slopes, and the inland towns have stayed loyal to the low house with a courtyard. What listings call an apartment is therefore, more often than not, a self-contained floor in a house, a home above a shop or a studio fitted out by a private owner.

On Houni, these apartments are almost always listed by their owners, and you contact them with no middleman. Supply is concentrated in the town of Le Kef and varies from week to week. It grows as the university year approaches and thins out over the winter.

A market almost entirely in the capital

The governorate's few residences and small blocks are in Le Kef itself, split between the delegations of Kef Est and Kef Ouest. The town centre and the newer districts on the edge of town account for most of the S+1 and S+2 units on offer, often in buildings of two or three storeys without a lift. For the eastern districts of the town, the page apartments for rent in Kef Est details what is rented area by area.

In Tajerouine and Dahmani, a few upper floor homes are rented above the shops on the main street, mostly to civil servants. Further out, in Sakiet Sidi Youssef, Kalaat Snan or Jerissa, apartments in the strict sense are almost non-existent: people rent houses there. If your job is in one of these delegations, widen the search to renting in Le Kef governorate, which includes houses and villa floors.

The studio, first choice for students and young civil servants

The most frequent search is still for a studio to rent in Le Kef. It comes from students at the town's university institutions, trainees and young government recruits arriving on their own. They want a room that can be heated, a small kitchen, a shower room and a rent that leaves enough to live on. A studio rarely costs more than 300 DT a month, a little more if furnished.

These studios go in the weeks before the academic year starts. Those who arrive mid-year find less choice and sometimes have to accept a room in a family home while they keep looking. A practical tip: for two people, an S+2 often costs barely more than two studios and is easier to heat. An S+2 in the capital frequently rents for between 350 and 550 DT depending on its condition and floor.

Students also share apartments, especially classmates on the same course. There is nothing official about it: often only one name appears on the lease. If that is your case, put in writing between you each person's share of the rent, deposit and bills, and tell the landlord who actually lives there.

Renting in Le Kef by the day

Many visitors look for an apartment to rent in Le Kef by the day. There is no shortage of reasons: a recruitment exam, a family wedding, a medical appointment, a visit to the kasbah and the medina, a summer festival, an outing to the Table de Jugurtha. The town has few hotels, and short lets fill part of the gap.

This supply remains largely informal. A few owners let a studio or a small furnished apartment for one or more nights, others accept a short stay if asked. Call the advertiser, give your exact dates and the number of people, and ask what is provided: sheets, blankets, gas, hot water. In winter, heating is no minor detail.

By the year: lease, charges and insulation

For an apartment rented by the year, expect a deposit of one or two months and one month in advance. Insist on a written lease, carry out a dated inventory, and note the meter readings on the day you move in. On a floor in the landlord's house, ask whether water and electricity are on a separate meter.

A top floor apartment under a concrete slab is the coldest in winter and the hottest in summer. A south facing aspect, windows in good condition and no damp marks in the corners are worth more than extra floor space. To compare with rents in other towns, the apartments for rent across Tunisia bring all the listings together.
